My recent Curiosity- The Mysterious Krishna (#18)
Since I've been listening to Indian classical music lately(it is melodious and soothing), I just so happened to listen to a song about Krishna, The God.
The song is about the paradoxes in the life of Krishna which made me really curious about him.
Looking back on my life, I realize that I was exposed to Krishna a lot during my childhood in the form of songs, stories and movies.
For example- When I was around 8-12 years of age, when we didn't have Television at our home, I used to go to my relative's house every weekend to watch a series on Krishna. I used to like it very much. Moreover, my religious Dad has the habit of singing devotional songs at home. He sings Bhagavad Geeta verses too. I myself used to recite these verses along with my Dad when I was a kid.
But, ever since I stopped believing in God (from my college days), I completely stopped consuming any content related to Devotion or GOD and hence Krishna.
Now, I want to read the life of Krishna with a genuine curiosity. I am fascinated by the conflicts/contradictions in his life. Though there are many contradictions, the strongest pull to read his entire story is the following paradox- the ultimate paradox.
"Krishna who opted not to fight the War(Mahabharatha) with his own hands persuaded his closest friend, Arjuna to fight in the war. This was after Arjuna's realization that fighting a WAR is useless because it entails death of his own family and friends."
And Here comes the most surprising thing.
"Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, the freedom fighter who fought his whole life to bring Independence to India through NON-VIOLENCE, declared in his autobiography that he often used to refer Bhagavad Geeta- the sacred text in which Krishna persuades Arjuna to choose VIOLENCE for winning the war."
I felt this interesting of how different people can interpret him in different ways.
So, I downloaded a couple of books on Krishna to read his complete story from beginning to end.
I presume that the author had a purpose to tell the story of Krishna.
How can the author call a person as GOD who has an appetite for a particular food item, who steals, who romances with many girls(this is controversial, I know), who doesn't want to fight a war himself but urges his best friend to fight the same war.
There must be something in his story that I missed.
Perhaps, I listened to the stories which are the interpretations of others.
So, I wanted to read the original story.
I wanted to read it objectively to get the essence of his story.
I don't want to accept that Krishna is a GOD and then read his story.
I want to look at his life objectively and decide for myself whether he has the qualities of a Superhuman or GOD.
I wanted to know whether that knowledge can be applied to my own life.
This is my recent curiosity.
